The Sound of Music

“The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds”

To be honest, I’ve not watched the movie released in 1965 starring Julie Andrews, but I’ve definitely watched the Musical version of it at the Esplanade Theatres.

Hence, when I was in Salzburg in 2011, I participated in this “Sound of Music Tour” organised by Panorama Tours, which was quite fun.

Our tour starts at 9:30am, but we were worried they won’t make any lunch stops along the way, so we ventured into the marketplace at Mirabellplatz.

Our tour guide was Naomi – a British girl who resided in Austria since she was young. She was very lively, and obviously a “Sound of Music” fan.

The first stop was to just step over to the Mirabell Gardens where the song “Do-Re-Mi” was filmed.

The Gardens was indeed beautiful in the month of April where lovely tulips were blooming! There were lots of pretty flowers blooming in spring and I thought I saw a something that resembled cherry blossoms!

After biding farewell to the Mirabell Gardens, we got up the “Sound of Music” tour bus and began our journey to Leopoldskron Palace. The view surrounding the palace was really lovely!

Hellbrunn Palace was next, where we could see the Gazebo where the song “16 going on 17” was filmed. I think I was more distracted by the lovely tulips that were growing near the gazebo! Haha…

The Salzburg Lake Districts were very scenic and there were a lot of people paragliding in the air! How I wish I could indulge in that sport! It must cost a bomb!

Our last stop was Mondsee, where we can expect to find the Wedding Chapel which Maria and Captain von Trapp got married. We settled our lunch at this little town as well.

There were lots of sing-along to the songs from “Sound of Music” during our bus journey. It was really an ‘eye-opening’ experience to see so many “Sound of Music” fans following the von Trapp family’s trails on this tour!
